DETAILS
A distinctive Art Deco emerald solitaire, dating to circa the 1920s, with an unusually intricate rectangular setting handcrafted in solid 14k yellow gold with a subtle champagne-rose hue.
At its centre is a natural emerald of richly saturated green colour. Its rectangular step cut gives the stone a clear architectural outline, while small characteristic inclusions lend it individual character. The emerald is transparent and in very good condition, with no chips or cracks. Its weight is estimated at approximately 1.3 carats from its dimensions of 8.45 × 6.55 × 3.3 mm.
The setting deserves particular attention. A carefully constructed openwork frame surrounds the emerald, with repeated slender gold bars arranged in precise parallel lines. Although the design has a clean simplicity, achieving this regular spacing and alignment by hand requires considerable jewellery-making skill.
The curved bars form an airy, sculptural gallery, visible from the sides as well as from above. Open split shoulders connect this rectangular framework to a slender band, giving the ring a delicate silhouette while keeping the emerald as its focal point.
Four claws hold the emerald at its corners and help protect these vulnerable points during wear. The open underside allows light to reach the stone and reveals the construction of the handmade setting.
Bearing Hungarian assay marks, circa 1920, this is a finely worked antique ring whose geometric proportions and meticulous openwork capture the character of Art Deco design.
